ChatGPT is way cheaper than using a formal interview coach and if you are applying for lots of interviews around your current job it can be challenging to personalize your answers to each job description and time consuming to research every company in detail.
So here are 7 practical ways that ChatGPT can save you tonnes of time in your interview preparation and help land you your dream job.
Company Research
Researching the company you are applying for can take ages. Especially if you have lots of interviews lined up.
Ask ChatGPT about the company you’re applying to and save yourself time googling.
//Example Prompt//
I want you to act as a corporate researcher. Tell me about the company Virti. For example how many employees do they have, how much capital have they raised, what is their vision and mission, who is their CEO? Provide the information in bullet points
Research Role Requirements
Most job descriptions will give you a summary of what the role involves but sometimes you want to get a wider look at the skills needed to do well in certain roles.
Just ask ChatGPT what companies look for when interviewing for a specific role.
//Example Prompt//
Job Title: Product Manager
Industry: Learning Apps
What do companies look for when interviewing candidates for the job title above in the above industry.
Summarise The Job Description
This one is really quick and can help you to weave relevant skills and language from the job description into your interview answers that will make interviewers think you’re a superstar hire.
Simply copy the job description for your target role and then ask ChatGPT to pull out the key information.
//Example Prompt//
Highlight the 5 most important skills in the job description
{Insert the job description}
Brainstorm Common Interview Questions
Preparing for any interview is the key to success and anticipating commonly asked interview questions makes your preparation ten times easier.
You can save yourself loads of time by asking ChatGPT to generate common questions. You can then create answers for these and give them to people to test you with mock interview practice.
//Example Prompt//
Job Title: {Head of Social Media Marketing}
You are a job interview coach. What are the 10 most common interview questions companies ask when interviewing for the above job?
Draft Your Answers
My number one tip for preparing effectively for interviews is to draft out your answers to the most common interview questions you know will come up.
Once you’ve identified the common questions ChatGPT can help you to structure and draft out your responses and it can even personalize them for you too.
//Example Prompt//
Job Title: {Head of Social Media Marketing}
Interview Question: Why are you applying for the role of head of social media marketing
You are an interview coach and are helping me to apply for the above role. Write an interview answer to the above question and tailor the answer to my own background and experience based on my resume. Use examples from the resume to demonstrate my skills and reflect on the experiences and say what I learned in each previous role.
Here is my resume: {Insert Resume}
Optimise Your Answer
Your first draft might not be perfect and that’s okay! To help craft the perfect interview answer you can make some edits, add in more detail and then run the answer back through ChatGPTto fine tune it further.
//Example Prompt//
Include more measurable metrics
Make the answer more relevant to the job description
Simulate An Interviewer
For interviews practice makes perfect. Did you know you can practise being interviewed using ChatGPT?
You can use a prompt to simulate any kind of interview.
Add in the specific position you're applying for for more accuracy.
//Example Prompt//
I want you to act as an interviewer. I will be the candidate and you will ask me the interview questions for the [INSERT] position. I want you to only reply as the interviewer. Do not write all the conservation at once.
I want you to only do the interview with me. Ask me the questions and wait for my answers. Do not write explanations. Ask me the questions one by one like an interviewer does and wait for my answers. My first sentence is "Hi".
You can then have a follow on conversation with the AI.
Act As An Interview Coach
Here’s a quick bonus prompt that I really like. With ChatGPT you can actually give a super specific prompt so that the AI acts as an interview coach. It will ask you questions, summarize the key issues and reflect things back to get you thinking and avoid spending huge amounts on coaching.
//Example prompt//
I want you to act as an interview coach who specializes in helping people prepare for job interviews. Only respond to me as if I am one of your clients who is seeking advice.
Your tone should be friendly, kind, supportive, and thoughtful. Lean into being direct when it is important information.
In total, ask me four to six distinct questions to gather information about the interview I'm preparing for and to learn about my strengths and weaknesses and what I need to work on ahead of the interview. Gather this information from all questions before summarizing my issue.
Only ask one question at a time and take my responses to those questions into account when asking your next question. After my response has been submitted, ask the next question (and wait for my reply to ask the next one). After each response, summarize what you are hearing to make sure you understand me before asking your next question.
Once you have received all of my responses, summarize the issue from my perspective and provide a 4 week interview preparation plan tailored to me and my specific job interview that addresses the issue.
Okay here’s another bonus prompt because I love them so much!
Write My Resume
Writing a CV or resume can be extremely time-consuming. But did you know you can copy in your existing resume or just jot down some key information and ChatGPT will structure and optimize everything from readability to how you are selling yourself.
Try something like the following prompt:
//Example prompt//
I want you to act as a resume writing expert and to generate a resume for me.
I want the resume to following the following headings and format:
- Personal Details
- Profile Summary
- Work History
- Education History
- Skills
Work history and education history should include the name of the position, date of employment and then a short bullet point summary of roles and responsibilities that sound impressive. Tailor the CV for the role of Head of Marketing.
Use the information below to write a resume that sells my best skills.
Personal Details:
Name: John Doe
