The 10 Best FREE AI Writing Tools 2023

Whether you're writing an essay, creating captions for social media or putting together an irresistible offer for a sales page having a go to writing tool will help you create high quality content while avoiding writers' block and saving you tonnes of time.

The problem is that with OpenAI's GPT AI openly available AI-powered copywriting tools are everywhere. If you search google or look through appSumo or Product Hunt it can be really difficult to figure out which is the best for you and you can end-up spend more time deciding than actually writing.

So to help you out I signed up to as many free AI-copywriting websites as I could find and used their free tiers to write blog posts over a week long period to figure out which were the easiest and most effective to create content with. I then put together a list of what I consider to be the 10 best AI writing tools that you can use without having to pay anything and I've even included a bonus 11th and 12th at the end together with my personal take on what THE best AI writing tool is and why.

What are the best AI writing tools?

In creating the list I focused on the free tiers available and looked specifically at the features and ease of use. This was a bit of an epic quest as there are so many out there and I discounted anything that was crazy expensive or where the UX was slow to get into. We want tools that get out of our way and help us to write as quickly as possible.

1. Reword: Best For Personalization

Kicking things off is Reword. As you'll see this is a little bit different to other AI writing tools on the list. Rather than just responding to prompts Reword is unique because you can train the AI using your existing articles and writing style.

One of the major issues with AI generated content is that it isn't unique and lacks some of the opinion and creativity of a human writer.

Reword tries to improve upon this by asking you to prime the AI by giving it information about your readers and what you write about in general. You can then either manually upload examples of your writing or, and this is where Reword comes into its own, connect it up to Google Search Console. When connected to GSC Reword will be able to understand the search intent behind your articles and analyse click through rates which is a killer feature if you are growing a blog.

The writing interface is nice and minimalist too. I love the UX because it's so simple. You're encouraged to brainstorm titles and sections for your article in the right hand bar and Reword will then offer a selection of suggested titles and sections for you to choose from which massively reduces research time.

The actual writer has 3 quick launch AI button AI enrich, rephrase and shorten and then has AI command which open the right hand window where you can enter prompts or use templates.

One of my favourite functions is to select a chunk of text and then use the prompt:

Edit in a natural internal link to: {https://...}

This will find an appropriate place to enter a link in your article and you can specific SEO-related keywords. Adding links can be really time consuming and this is a great feature.

Reword has two big pluses against it. Firstly it's free tier and low pricing for paid tiers make it super accessible. Secondly the training and personalization ability mean the content produced is less generic. Reword's only downside is that it's run by a small team so you're not going to get the all the additional features of some of the larger companies we'll see later in this list.

2.CopyAI: Best for Copywriting

CopyAI provides a range of automated creativity tools to overcome writer's block, along with AI-generated templates that can jumpstart your writing projects. The platform also includes a long-form document editor that allows you to centralize your ideas and streamline your writing process.

CopyAI's workflow for product descriptions includes AI-powered writing tips and ideas to help you create effective content.

CopyAI features a Chat interface similar to ChatGPT but pairs this with a notes field on the right hand side of the screen so that you can save your responses directly. Unlike ChatGPT the Copy Chat bot has the ability to scrape websites for public data which means it can personalize emails from data on Linkedin or summarize a YouTube video if you supply the link and it will even search pubmed and provide links and summaries if you're writing an academic article.
The pop-up modal-based interface may not be to everyone's liking but it is fairly simple and minimalist.

CopyAI's biggest benefit is it's pricing. It has a 2000 word limit on it's free plan and then unlimited words on it's paid plan which starts at $49/month.

Features

  • CopyAI offers a free version that doesn't require a credit card and is free forever.

3. Rytr: Best For Newbies

Rytr is an affordable AI-powered content writing platform that helps you generate content at scale for any niche.

If you've never used an AI-powered writing tool it is a good one to start with as it's interface is very simplistic.

It's free tier offers up to 10,000 characters (not words) as well as AI generated art. Unlimited characters wil. then set you back $39.

Ryter has a built in plagiarism detector to ensure any content created is original which is a feature lots of AI copywriting tools lack.

4. Sudowrite: Best For Books/Novels

Overview

Sudowrite is an AI writing tool that has gone in big on a unique UX and visual story-writing tools.

It's very user-friendly with an engaging aesthetic and it uses prompt templates really effectively with large buttons automating key tasks like write, describe, re-write and more.

Sudowrite's main audience is story writers with prompts designed to generate ideas for characters, plot-twists and genres like romance or thriller. The writing layout is really clean with the prompt window on the right of the writing area and a really cool drag and drop interface.

Sudowrite's most unique feature come in the form of it's feedback, canvas, brainstorm and visualize prompts. At the press of a button feedback will give you simulated feedback from a reader persona to check what you have already written. Brainstorm will generate alternative words and character names for you to make your story more engaging while visualize will produce art generated from your descriptions. Canvas is a separate brainstorming area where you can generate alternate plot points, character secrets, and plot twists for inspiration and references in one place.

If you're looking to write a novel Sudowrite is a great choice.

Features

  • Write: your AI assistant suggests your next content

  • Rewrite: If you didn’t like how something turned out, you can rewrite it

The pricing options are broken down by how many words you can generate.

Max: $100/mo up to 300,000 words per month

5.Jenni.ai: Best For Academics

Jenni takes a lot from Notion's minimalist interface. When you start a new project Jenni asks you whether you're a student writing an academic essay or a content creator writing copy for a blog. This then personalized the tone and Jenni guides you through the writing process.

Jenni comes with a plagiarism checker on paid plans and also has a citation generator to save you time.

The free tier comes with 2000 words a month or 2 blog posts and then pricing scales up.

Pricing

  • Free tier
  • Paid tier from $6/month

6.WriteSonic: Budget-Friendly SEO Writer

WriteSonic is similar to Jasper in terms of features but offers quite a bit more in terms of customization. Writesonic features a ChatGPT style interface called Chatsonic and a generative art tool called Photosonic. Chatsonic has a nice feature that allows you to select as persona for the AI from a drop down menu.

Unlike other tools Writesonic allows you to edit some of the internal workings of it's API. For example in Photosonic the AI art tool you can easily switch between DALL-E and Stable Diffusion. In ChatSonic you can include web scraping and even activate text to speech conversion.

One of Writesonic's coolest features is it's bulk edit ability. If you have lots of content that needs to be written or edited you can upload an Excel file, set the parameters and then have everything written all at once.

Writesonic's vanilla editor is really nice too. There is a huge prompt library which is nicely organised with Editor's choices and each prompt has a rating based on user feedback to help you find the best prompt for you. You can save your own prompts too.

When writing a new article Writesonic has a very user-friendly interface with a full screen writing mode that has integrations to Surfer SEO as well as a stepwise blog creation process which takes you from the blog title down to text.

There is a 1-click WordPress export and some really nice prompts including creating copy for a whole landing page and a twitter thread.

Writesonic's free tier gives you 10,000 words and there is a 30% discount on paid plans for students. The entry level paid plan is $12.67 per month and comes with 60,000 words which is just a bit less than Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone a month or around 60 1,000 word blog posts per month.

Features

  • Generates top-notch marketing material for your brand in minutes
  • Auto-generated blog post and optimized article in just seconds.
  • It generates the highest quality of contents related articles
  • AI-powered article and blog writer to give your writing the perfect tone, flow, structure, and voice.
  • It generates formidable marketing copy with a few simple clicks.

7. ChatGPT: Best For Ease of Use

Okay so I can't do a Top 10 list without mentioning ChatGPT. It's completely free and it's responses are excellent provided you have solid understanding of prompt engineering and know how to use it.

There are no prompt template buttons to quickly click on and at peak times you might get locked out for a while but for the most part it's excellent and it's free.

ChatGPT Plus costs $20/month and offers availability even when demand is high, faster response speeds and priority access to new features like new GPT models. In my experience the response time and availability is pretty good on the free tier and when other paid solutions offer full text editing and prompt templates you're probably best to stick with ChatGPT vanilla.

As a quick extra here you can also use the OpenAI playground which comes with free credits and allows you to select from different language models. If you go over the limit you will be charged but it's a nice option to have and if you have some engineering skills the API is very easy to inetgarte into pretty much any textfield which is why we now have so many AI writing startups.

8. Notion AI: Best For Notetakers

Like lots of note-taking apps Notion has integrated generative AI into their platform allowing users to create content directly from their Notion dashboard.

Notion already has a really nice minimalist interface with the full screen mode making your writing area the center of attention. Notion comes with a host of pre-configured prompt templates that can be activated at the click of a button and includes everything from grammar checking and translation to generating new text. You can also enter your own prompts too.

For anyone using Notion as a second brain the AI Writer is a great way to summarize saved articles, expand upon ideas or just improve the readability of an essay.

Notion AI isn't designed for a specific use case and there's no chat interface here or ways to scrape the web or pull in SEO data but if you're an existing Notion user or your primary focus is on notetaking and basic writing it's a nice option.

Pricing starts at $8/month which is a nice entry point for an already great tool.

9. Scalenut: Best for Powerful AI Commands with SEO

Scalenut combines AI writing with SEO research. It's comparable to using Jasper with the SEO Surfer integration, but with the added benefit of not requiring the purchase of two separate tools. Simply input your desired keyword, and Scalenut provides a document editor that focuses on your keyword, complete with a panel on the left displaying your competitors.

Scalenut's workflow is very much for writers who are looking to optimise their search engine optimisation and ensure they rank for keywords within the article they are writing. It also comes with a google Chrome extension and if you use Wordpress for your blog it also has an integration to pblish to your wordpress site directly.

For this reason the interface is a little more complex than other pure writing tools and if you aren't already familiar with SEO and keywords and using Google Search Console it's probably best to choose another writing tool and focusing on producing quality original content.

If you're searching for an all-in-one tool that includes SEO capabilities and unlimited word count, Scalenut is a great choice. Scalenut has a free forever tier which caps you 2000 words and then the growth plan comes with unlimted words

Features

  • Free version – no credit card required, and it’s free forever
  • SEO Research – not relying on an integration, SEO is within the platform
  • Long-form AI writing tools
  • AI article writer
  • Short-form AI writing
  • Collaboration
  • No word length restrictions

10. QuillBot: Best for Proofreading, Plagiarism Checking, and Citations

QuillBot is an awesome tool that has a few really useful features when it comes to writing. Top of the list is it's paraphrasing tool that allows you to quickly enter text or upload a whole document and paraphrase and change the tone in a flash.

Quillbot is designed for research and academic study and it's co-writer has some really nice features when it comes to researching and generating content. Quillbot's research function in co-writer is able to pull in similar articles from the web and list out the key points and even the keywords. These can then be used to structure your own article. There is also a citation generator that allows you to reference these articles quickly.

One draw back here is that although the co-writer will generate new content and rephrase existing text there is no way to enter your own prompts to customize this.

Beyond the co-writer Quillbot also features a grammar checker and translator and a summarizer as well as a plagiarism checker which is an awesome function to check originality of your article which is missing on many AI writers.

Quillbot features plugins for Word if you want to work right from a document and a chrome extension so you can use Quillbot on any webpage.

Quillbot features a free tier with an annual plan of $99/year which is excellent value for what you're getting.

Features

  • Paraphraser – Takes content you paste in and paraphrase it so that it meets your needs
  • Grammar Checker – Makes sure you sound professional and grammatically correct
  • Plagiarism Checker – You can paste in text you want to check or upload your file
  • Co-Writer – This is your AI writing assistant to help you generate new ideas based off what you’ve written
  • Summarizer – I’ve been looking for an AI tool that can summarize content for you! QuillBot’s summarizer does a solid job
  • Citation Generator – Helps you track and properly cite your citations
  • Browser extension for Chrome
  • Microsoft Word extension

Pricing

Annual: $8.33/mo

Semi-Annual: $13.33/mo

Monthly: $19.95/mo

Okay so just before I wrap up and give my opinions on the best free AI writing tools I want to cover two bonus tools that didn't quite make the list.

11. Wordtune: Simple Tool for Paraphrasing

First up if you're looking for an even simpler version of Quillbot Wordtune is really cool because it offers a free a Chrome extension as well as a long-form document editor.

One of the key features of Wordtune is its ability to improve readability. It uses AI to suggest changes that can make your writing clearer and more concise. This feature can be particularly useful for those who struggle with wordy or convoluted writing. Wordtune's prompt template buttons focus on re-phrasing and changing the tone of what you have written with the UX showing a list of options for you to choose from.

Wordtune is a free browser extension and perfect for fine-tuning your work. Paid plans start at $9.99/month for unlimited re-writes and expanded tones.

Features

  • Artificial Intelligence article rewriter
  • Change the tone of your text
  • Expand or shorten your content
  • Spelling and grammar checks
  • Microsoft Word integration

Pricing

12. Jasper: Best for Power Users

Jasper is the most funded AI writing company out there having raised over $130M. Unlike the tools we've seen so far Jasper is trying to be an all-in-one platform offering everything from AI generated copy to AI generated art. It has a free trial but not a true free tier. Despite that it has some awesome features if you're willing to pay.

Jasper has integrated Chat into their interface and like other tools has a large selection of prompts available to help you overcome writers' block. The Chat interface is a bit cleaner than Copy.ai but lacks the ability to scrape external data.

Jasper's prompts library is pretty expansive compared to other AI writing tools with everything from writing a movie script to technical blog formats at the press of a button. Jasper's Chrome extension which allows you to use generative AI on any webpage reduces the time required to application switch and it's integrations with tools like Surfer SEO are really helpful even if the later comes at an additional price. Jasper also has image generation capabilities though these come at an additional cost.

Jasper's main selling point may well be it's community. Jasper was able to grow quickly before the new wave of OpenAI API-powered apps and it did this with effective marketing and a supportive facebook community of copywriters helping each other to improve.

The actual responses output are exactly the same as any other AI writing tool that uses the GPT API and so if this is your primary need other solutions may produce the same results at a lower price point and if you're looking for a complete solution definitely try this against Writesonic in terms of features and pricing.

Features

  • Long-form document editor – a powerful tool that allows you to write full documents with AI-assisted outputs.
  • Plagiarism detector – write without worrying about accusations of stealing someone else’s content
  • Speed writing – hit start, and the software will create a masterpiece for your blog post or article within minutes!
  • Integration with SEO Surfer – a tool that helps you analyze keywords and optimize your content to rank in search engines
  • Automated article writing software – if you give it enough parameters, content creator AI can almost write your articles for you
  • Facebook community that offers support, job opportunities, and more
  • Multiple languages
  • Write novels, blog/articles, video scripts, and more with Jasper!
  • AI wizard can produce over one million sentences

Pricing

Boss Mode: Starts at $49/mo for 50,000 words/mo.

SEO Surfer add-on: starts at $59/mo

Jasper Art add-on: $20/mo

What Is The Best AI Writing Tool?

So for me personally I found that because it's free and very easy to use I tended to default back to ChatGPT itself over free alternatives if I was doing things like brainstorming blog titles or simplifying text. For creating longer form blogs I found that Reword with its ability to train itself based on your existing posts was really cool and it's interface is very easy to use.

In terms of academic writing I think Quillbot or Wordtune combined with Notion or CopyAI and it's citations is super powerful.

And if I was looking for an SEO-specific tool for writing with more in-depth keyword features Scalenut is a great option but isn't for the casual user.

An extra shout out to Sudowrite which is perfect for creatives looking to write Novels.

The overall thing I took away from all of this is that a lot of thee tools are pretty much the same in their function. They all use similar APIs and it's more to do with the user interface and pricing than the output they produce.

While they will all generate content you want to be producing unique and valuable content rather than spamming out AI-generated text that lacks originality.

With Microsoft integrating GPT into Office 365 AI-writing is becoming the norm and so it's really important to choose a writing tool that saves you time over features you may not need.

What is an AI writing assistant?

In content production, AI writing helps content writers in the content generation process. The process might involve brainstorming ideas to generate unique article drafts. AI-assisted content marketing efforts can also include landing pages, product descriptions, YouTube video titles, marketing copy, and Google ads.

AI writing assistants support content creators so they can focus on their craft and not worry about how to produce unique content, such as articles or e-books; however, AI writing assistants are not yet at the level where popular blogs rely on them for every post from scratch without any human intervention.

Utilizing AI writing enhances the writing skills of anyone and enables them to save time.

How do AI writers work?

Artificial intelligence involves combining artificial intelligence with machine learning algorithms to create literary neural networks. AI software training teaches these networks to read the text and then experiment with themselves. Once acquired knowledge through intensive repetition, the computer can begin mimicking actual writing with astonishing accuracy.

Is AI writing good for content creators?

I believe AI writing software can be a great complement to content writing, it can help in composing blog posts, advertisements, landing pages, etc. These best AI tools fulfill content marketers’ dreams. Although there are many types of AI software, they all make learn from previous writing and can then generate bulk content to help content writers.

It allows you to upgrade from simple Google docs to advanced features that can only be found in AI writing software tools. “Content generation” the state of natural language generation in content marketing.

Why should I use an AI writing tool?

Think of AI as a tool that helps you. Not something scary that will take away your job. It’ll make your work go faster and streamline your workflow. You can create content and utilize your time more wisely. AI content writing tools are a valuable addition to your writing process.

Don’t just ask yourself “Why should I use AI writing tool?” and maybe instead ask yourself, “Why shouldn’t I use an AI writing tool?”

Are AI writing tools accurate?

AI writing tools are trained on language models and so they often offer a best guess at how to structure content based on the text they have been trained on.

GPT models have been trained up to 2021 and don't natively search the internet or fact-check content. It's always advisable to check over anything written by AI for accuracy.

Are AI writing tools better than humans?

While AI can write content it lacks the creativity and opinions of human writers. You can get pretty accurate responses if you give good prompts but generic prompts will produce generic answers which a human writer will out perform most of the time. The draw back is that a human takes much longer to write and can be more expensive.
